Drives sized, set upand kept running

Variable frequency drives and soft starters selected against the load rather than the motor nameplate alone — supplied, installed in panels we build, parameterised, integrated with the PLC and commissioned on the machine.

What this covers

Sizing against the load

Constant torque, variable torque or constant power — a conveyor, a fan and a crane hoist each size differently. Starting torque, duty cycle, overload profile and ambient all go into the selection alongside the motor kW.

Harmonics and power quality

Line reactors, DC chokes, 12-pulse or active front ends where the drive would otherwise distort the supply, chosen so your transformer and generator stay comfortable with the result.

Braking and regeneration

Dynamic braking resistors sized for the duty, or regenerative units where the load drives the motor often enough to pay for them — hoists, downhill conveyors, centrifuges.

EMC and cabling

Screened motor cable, correct gland termination, segregated routing and output filters on long runs. Most nuisance trips and stray encoder faults we are called to turn out to be wiring.

Motor protection

Thermistor and PTC inputs, overload models, phase loss and earth fault settings configured and proven — not left on factory defaults.

Parameterisation and tuning

V/f, sensorless vector or closed loop with encoder feedback, auto-tuned to the actual motor, with ramps and current limits set to what the mechanics can take.

Network integration

Drives on the same fieldbus as the PLC, so speed reference, status, current and fault codes all appear on the SCADA screen.

Parameter backup and spares

Every drive’s parameter set saved and handed over, so a replacement can be swapped in and loaded by your own fitter at 2am.

Drive brands

ABB · Siemens · Allen-Bradley · Delta · Schneider · Mitsubishi Electric

Typical applications

Conveyors and material handling · fans and pumps · crane hoist and travel · mixers and agitators · furnace auxiliaries · barrage gates

Also supported

Drives installed by others, including obsolete series and unrecorded parameter sets

Platforms we work on

We are not tied to one vendor. The right controller is the one your maintenance team can get spares for.

ABB

ACS series drives and soft starters, from machinery to industrial ratings.

Siemens

SINAMICS G120 and V20, with SIMOTICS motors on Profinet.

Allen-Bradley

PowerFlex drives over EtherNet/IP, integrated with Logix controllers.

Delta

MS300 and C2000 series, commonly paired with Delta PLCs and HMIs.

Schneider

Altivar process and machine drives over Modbus TCP.

Mitsubishi Electric

FR-E and FR-A series, typically alongside MELSEC controllers.

Running on something obsolete?

Most of what we are called in for is an existing plant — a control system nobody can buy parts for any more.

  • DC drives and DC motorsAC drive and induction motor, with the process behaviour matched
  • Direct-on-line and star-delta startersSoft start or VFD, with the mechanical shock taken out
  • Obsolete drive series with no sparesA current series, parameters transcribed and re-tuned
  • Throttled fans and valved pumpsSpeed control, where the energy saving usually pays for the drive
  • Keypad-only drivesNetworked drives with status and faults on the SCADA screen

How a job runs

Design, build and commissioning are all ours, so there is no gap between the drawing, the panel and the engineer on site.

  1. 01

    Load and motor survey

Nameplates, duty cycle, existing starter arrangement and supply capacity recorded before anything is quoted.

  2. 02

    Selection and calculations

Drive rating, filter and braking requirement, cable sizing and enclosure thermal check, issued for approval.

  3. 03

    Panel manufacture

Drive or MCC panel built in our own works, with ventilation sized for the duty the drive will run.

  4. 04

    Factory acceptance test

Powered up, parameters loaded, network communication proven with the PLC before it ships.

  5. 05

    Installation and tuning

Erection, motor termination, auto-tune and ramp tuning on the real load by our engineers.

  6. 06

    Handover

Parameter backups, settings schedule, spares list and training for your maintenance team.

What you get at handover

Documentation is part of the job. You should be able to maintain the system yourself, and call us because you want to.

  • Drive selection and sizing calculation
  • Motor and cable schedule
  • Panel general arrangement and wiring drawings
  • Harmonic and filter assessment where applicable
  • Drive parameter schedule and backup files
  • Protection settings record
  • FAT and SAT records, signed
  • Operation and maintenance manual
  • Spares list with part numbers
  • Maintenance team training
