P&ID drawing meeting the real thing — tagged pressure, temperature and level transmitters on a process line

Automation · Products

If it is not measured properly,it cannot be controlled

Transmitters, switches and sensors specified for the actual process conditions, installed so the reading is true, calibrated against a standard, and wired into the control system with the signal path documented end to end.

What this covers

Specification and selection

Range, wetted materials, process connection, ingress and hazardous-area rating chosen against the real conditions — temperature, pressure, slurry, vibration — so the device suits the duty as well as the port.

Installation that measures correctly

Impulse lines sloped the right way, seals and capillaries where needed, straight runs upstream of flow meters, thermowells at the right insertion depth. Most bad readings trace back to installation.

Calibration and loop checking

Each instrument calibrated across its span and each loop proven field-to-screen, recorded on a schedule with the reference standard noted so the figures mean something later.

Signal conditioning and isolation

Isolators, barriers and surge protection on long field runs, screened and segregated cabling, and earthing done once at the right point rather than everywhere.

Machine safety devices

Belt conveyor pull-cord and belt-sway switches, limit switches, zero-speed and chute-block detection, wired into interlocks and proven to stop the drive.

Condition monitoring

Vibration, bearing temperature and load trending on the machines that hurt most when they fail, so a bearing is changed at a planned stop.

Remote data and reporting

Readings logged, trended and turned into shift or batch reports — including plants where the owner watches the numbers from another city. This is usually where SENTIENT comes in.

Fault-finding on existing loops

Drifting readings, intermittent signals and loops that have been in manual for years. We trace them back through the cable and the card before touching the transmitter.

What we supply

Level and pressure transmitters · temperature assemblies · flow meters · load cells and belt weighers · encoders and limit switches · belt conveyor safety switches · PID controllers · condition monitoring · radio-modem and RADAR links

Also supported

Existing field instrumentation installed by others, including loops with no records and instruments long out of calibration

Sectors

Steel and ferro alloys · refineries and oil · coal washeries and mines · material handling · boilers · food and process plants · distillery and bottling

Platforms we work on

We are not tied to one vendor. The right controller is the one your maintenance team can get spares for.

Level

Radar, ultrasonic, capacitance, float and differential-pressure level transmitters, plus point-level switches.

Pressure

Gauge, absolute and differential pressure transmitters, with seals and capillaries for hot or fouling service.

Temperature

RTD and thermocouple assemblies with thermowells, transmitters and indicators.

Flow

Electromagnetic, ultrasonic, differential-pressure and mechanical flow measurement, sized for the pipe and the fluid.

Weight and load

Load cells, belt weighers and batching systems tied into the PLC for recipe and production counting.

Speed and position

Encoders, proximity and zero-speed switches, limit switches and position feedback for drives and gates.

Safety switches

Pull-cord, belt-sway, chute-block and tilt switches for conveyors and material handling.

Condition monitoring

Vibration and bearing temperature monitoring, with alarm thresholds set to the machine it is watching.

Running on something obsolete?

Most of what we are called in for is an existing plant — a control system nobody can buy parts for any more.

  • Chart recorders and local gaugesTransmitters logged, trended and reportable
  • Loops left in manual for yearsInstruments repaired or replaced and the loop tuned back into auto
  • Readings written on a clipboardAutomatic logging with shift and batch reports
  • Obsolete transmitters with no sparesCurrent instruments, ranges and tags carried across
  • Unprotected long field runsIsolated and surge-protected signals that stop dropping out

How a job runs

Design, build and commissioning are all ours, so there is no gap between the drawing, the panel and the engineer on site.

  1. 01

    Instrument survey

We list what is installed, what it reads and what nobody trusts any more — with the process conditions at each point.

  2. 02

    Specification and index

Instrument index, datasheets, ranges and hook-up drawings issued for approval before procurement.

  3. 03

    Supply and panel integration

Instruments supplied and marshalling built into panels from our own works, with the I/O card allocation agreed.

  4. 04

    Installation and hook-up

Mounting, impulse lines, cabling, glanding and termination on site by our own engineers.

  5. 05

    Calibration and loop check

Every instrument calibrated and every loop proven field-to-screen, signed off point by point.

  6. 06

    Handover

Calibration records, instrument index, hook-up drawings, spares list and training for your maintenance team.

What you get at handover

Documentation is part of the job. You should be able to maintain the system yourself, and call us because you want to.

  • Cable schedule and termination details
  • Calibration certificates and records
  • Loop check schedules, signed
  • Alarm and trip setting schedule
  • Operation and maintenance manual
  • Spares list with part numbers
